We are thrilled to introduce our latest partnership with figurative artist, Elise Mendelle, and welcome some of her latest work. Elise works with acrylics, capturing a moment, a feeling in time through her expressive brushstrokes. Each piece tells a story but open to interpretation where a viewer can uncover their unique connection to the presented scene. 'Painted in a pared-back colour palette, every piece of work is subtle and serene but filled with emotion and meaning'. The artist has exhibited at art galleries across Europe with her prints and paintings part of collections around the globe.
GETTING TO KNOW ELISE MENDELLE:
How did you get started?
I'm originally Canadian and moved to London almost 20 years ago where I now live and work with my husband and three children. I started painting originally as an excuse to escape and have some me-time, and found that I developed a great sense of identity and purpose through developing my art practice.
My work has evolved over time, moving towards figurative work and my unique, minimalist style. I find myself drawn to women in the modern world, how they present themselves, how they look, how they feel. By keeping my brushstrokes loose and rhythmical, I keep the narrative wide open and invite interpretation into the presented scenes that I paint. Interest in my work continues to grow, which continuously delights and amazes me and keeps me motivated to develop as an artist.
Can you tell us about the process of making your work and what inspires you?
I almost always start with a feeling or a theme – it’s usually something that is personal and relevant to me at that particular time. I think about a collection in detail before I start – how it will look, what pieces will be included, what colour palette I’ll be using, and what emotion I want my viewer to take away. Then I do some research, prep, get inspired and start painting!
I am inspired online and in the real world. I love people watching, especially looking at people’s fashion choices, poses, interactions and emotional responses. I also get inspired by scrolling different social platforms, as well as seeing what’s trending in interiors, fashion, accessories and lifestyle brands.
Over the years, you created a vast portfolio of intriguing 'Impressions'. Could you discuss a piece that holds a particular significance for you, or a special place in your collection?
Belief (pictured left with Elise) is one of the first pieces in my more minimalist style. It really catapulted my practice into new directions and helped me gain the confidence to present my work in a new way, with less detail and without facial expressions. This piece was sold to a collector in the US who is also an artist; it is always really special when another artist loves your work!
Why do you love what you do?
Depending on the piece or the collection, I want people to feel moved and really take their own personal experiences from my art. Whether my paintings evoke a memory, remind them of a loved one, or conjure up a specific time and place, I love hearing stories from my audience on what they see in the work as it’s unique to each individual. Art has immense power, and I hope that my work also empowers people to be unique, confident and strong.
I love developing my art practice, taking part in shows and exhibitions, and seeing my artwork go to new homes around the world. It’s the best feeling to really make connections with others through my work!
You are originally from Canada, are there any places (hidden gems) you would recommend to visit?
There are so many beautiful places in Canada to visit, all the way across the country. One of my favourite cities is Vancouver (in British Columbia), it’s definitely worth a visit; it’s got a very laid back vibe and is very beautiful visually as well. Lake Louise in Banff, Alberta is one of the most breathtaking places on the planet. I’m originally from Toronto - if you’re ever there, definitely try to visit in summer and go downtown to the Distillery District which is a great arty area with lots of galleries. This summer we are hoping to go to Eastern Canada to Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, two provinces which are meant to be beautiful!
Lastly, have you had a chance to browse through our selections? What are your favourite pieces on The Collaborative Store?
Too many to choose from, but my current favourites include the Coffee Cup in Speckled Grey, the Granite Tray in Graphite and the Recycled Wool Throw in Natural Beige. I love homewares, there are so many gorgeous ones on The Collaborative Store!
